I am old enough to remember those confirmation sessions. It was a (premonitional?) show of grievance and bravado. “High tech lynching for uppity blacks”? Ironic now, isn’t it?

Ironically, it might be said that he was nominated for the Negro Seat, once occupied by Thurgood Marshall — the ultimate DEI hire.

I remember the sessions too (albeit I was on the younger side then). They changed the tenor of confirmation hearings considerably moving forward.
